Five Ways to Feel More Body Positivity Everyday

We talk about Body positivity a lot at Taboo Tabou because it is one of the most crucial parts of our mission. On a daily basis, we are bombarded with images that a lot of times promote insecurity and just a general feeling of shittiness. For many years there has been a movement of making people feel inadequate. Maybe you were too fat, too skinny, too short, too tall. Maybe you are too feminine, too masculine, too bossy. We’ve all thought we were too much of something. Beyond that, because of the way media projects a particularly preferred body type (which has changed over years but always created a hierarchy of beauty) we’ve all just felt like general shit.

There are people out there changing that, and it is starting to make an impact on how women and men feel about their bodies. Marie Hald is talking about how imagery can affect people and cause an unhealthy lifestyle. Elle Chase is promoting body positivity for all and a self-confidence that extends outside in the world and the bedroom. Ashley Graham is out there rocking out her beauty and telling everyone to eat their standards. All of this is making an impact and helping us all realize that everyone is beautiful and unique and that Lady Gaga was right when she was rocking out her born this way movement.

Seek Out Images that Reflect Different bodies, races, and ideas.

One of the most powerful things you can do is find resources for pictures of people that have different bodies, races, and ideas. When we look at magazines, typically we what we see is this one idea of beauty. The more and more you see that the more you find yourself feeling like shit about yourself. Finding places, such as  body positive Tumblr pages will impact your self-esteem and ideas of body positivity.

Find Stores That Promote Body Positivity through products and energy.

It’s important to find those stores that have positive energy toward all shapes and sizes. Whenever we find ourselves shopping in stores like Forever 21 and realizing that we don’t fit in anything we feel like shit about ourselves. Most places, especially corporate places, use imagery to create a lust for you. Wear this so you can look like this girl. Buy this lipstick so that you will look like Taylor Swift. All of that is rooted in negativity and is just downright terrible for helping you feel your beauty.

Be Present in Your Body

This is hard. Our whole lives are made up of ways to make us less present. We have cell phones to distract us, jobs to keep us busy, and media to stop us from being present in the moment. When we lose touch with ourselves and being positive about ourselves is that much harder. Take a moment and breathe in and become present in your own body. Feel your toes and skin, and listen to yourself breathing and living. When you become present in your body, it is a lot easier to forgive yourself for whatever is making you hurt at that moment.

Find Beauty in Others and Yourself

Because we are in such a negative body world, it is effortless to get caught up in it and view that in other people. We have all had some pretty bad thoughts about how someone looks and even though we didn’t say it out loud it did consume us. Retrain your brain to start to find beauty in others and rephrase how you view other people so that you are on the positive instead of focusing on the negative.

 

Do Things That Make You Feel Good

Maybe you loved dancing when you were a kid or reading a damn good book is an amazing feeling. When you start to get down on yourself, find those activities that bring you back to yourself and do them as much as you can until you start to feel better. Do those activities that bring you pleasure because those are the things that will make you feel better about yourself. Don’t know what those things are? We are aware, it can sometimes feel tough. Begin exploring new things and hobbies, maybe find your way to our body-positive burlesque class on July 31st or join a new art class. Do something and do something that brings you happiness.
